Popular all over the world, drum winches reel in and store the anchor chain and rope, versus a windlass that uses a gypsy to retrieve the rode and feeds it into an anchor locker.
When the drum is unwound, the drum produces a very high torque. The drum provides safe and tidy storage for chain and rope although its capacity is limited by its size. Drums
are easy to use, after setting anchor it is unnecessary to secure the chain and the anchor can be retrieved just as easily. A Winch is less prone to jam than a windlass which can feed
rode into tangled piles backing onto the gypsy.
